Creation and main roles of the Assam Provincial Congress Committee

The Assam Provincial Congress Committee (APCC) was formed in 1921 when the Assam Association decided to merge with the Indian National Congress. Many Assamese leaders supported the merger because the Congress planned to reorganise states on a linguistic basis, which would help protect the Assamese language. An adhoc committee was created in June 1921 with Kuladhar Chaliha as President.
Main roles of APCC:
i. It invited Mahatma Gandhi to Assam in 1921, which helped spread the Non-Cooperation Movement and encouraged the Swadeshi spirit.
ii. It hosted the 41st All India Congress Committee session at Pandu in 1926.
iii. Leaders like Bishnuram Medhi, Siddhinath Sarma, Maulana Tayebullah, Ambikagiri Raichoudhury and others worked actively to implement Congress programmes in Assam.
iv. Under Gopinath Bordoloi, the Assam Congress successfully opposed the grouping of Assam with East Bengal under the Cabinet Mission Plan, with Gandhi’s support.
