Assam has a rich and colourful tradition of folk songs. These songs are sung during marriages, festivals, harvesting seasons, and community gatherings. Assamese folk songs are simple, sweet, and reflect the life and feelings of common people.
Famous folk song traditions include Kamrupi and Goalparia songs. Other popular types are Aainam, Dhainam, Tokari/ Dotara songs, Chiyageet, Nangeli Geet, and Cherradhek.
Many folk singers of Assam have received high honours for their contributions. Khagen Mahanta, Rameswar Patak, and Pratima Pandey Baruah received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Pratima Pandey Baruah, a famous Goalparia singer, was also awarded the Padma Shri.
