The old Sanskrit literature of India may be regarded as the soul of Indian culture and civilization. These writings clearly show how people lived in ancient times. They tell us about their values, beliefs, and knowledge in different subjects like medicine, engineering, science, and politics. These books were written by very wise people who studied hard, thought deeply, and worked with great effort. These writings helped shape Indian society and brought cultural unity among people. They taught important values like respect for parents, teachers (Gurus), and guests, love for learning, and also explained the four-caste system in Hinduism. They also made ideas like rebirth (transmigration), liberation (moksha), heaven and hell, and good and bad deeds well known.
Famous messages such as ‘Satyameva Jayate’ from the Mundak Upanishad, ‘Ahimsa Paramo Dharma’ from the Mahabharata, ‘Janani Janmabhoomi Cha Swargadapi Gariyasi’ from the Ramayana, and ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ from the Mahopanishad helped build the Indian value system. Later, these Sanskrit writings were translated into many Indian languages. The values from these books are still followed in Indian families through group singing (Nam-kirtan), customs, and traditions. The teachings of these books have become life values for the people.
