Brief history of the establishment of Assam Medical College

The first medical college of Assam was started in Dibrugarh. It was also the first medical college in the whole North-East region. It began as the Berry White School of Medicine, which was set up in 1900 with a donation of ₹50,000 from Dr. John Berry White, a Civil Surgeon of the East India Company.

In 1910, the college brought two X-ray machines from England. These were among the first X-ray machines in India and helped the college improve medical education and treatment.

After the Second World War (1945), the college was shifted to the nearby hospital campus that was earlier used by the US Army.

On 3 November 1947, soon after India became independent, the college was officially renamed as Assam Medical College by the government of Gopinath Bordoloi. This is considered an important achievement of the Bordoloi Ministry.

Today, 3 November is celebrated every year as the Foundation Day of the college.
