In ancient times, architecture did not develop much in Assam. But in the medieval period, under the Ahom and Koch kings, many important buildings and temples were constructed. These buildings were made mainly from brick and stone.
Famous architectural structures of Assam include: Rong Ghar, Kareng Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Temples such as Kamakhya, Ugratara, Umananda, Joy Doul, Devi Doul, Fakua Doul, Hayagriva-Madhab Temple (Hajo), Sukreswar Temple, Dergaon Shiva Temple, and Bishwanath Navagraha.
The Ahom kings paid great attention to construction. They even appointed a special officer called Changrung Phukan to supervise the building and maintenance of roads, temples, palaces, and other structures.
