Bihu is the most important festival of Assam and is celebrated by people of all castes and religions. There are three Bihus in a year:
1) Bohag or Rongali Bihu: It is celebrated at the start of the Assamese New Year (last day of Sot month and first six days of Bohag). It is full of joy and celebration.
i. The first day is Goru Bihu, when cows are washed and cared for.
ii. The second day is Manuh Bihu, when people wear new clothes and younger people seek blessings from elders.
iii. Bihu dance, songs, games, and cultural programmes take place.
iv. Musical instruments like dhol, pepa, and siphung are played.
2) Kartik or Kongali Bihu: Is observed on the first day of the Kartik month. This is a quieter Bihu. People light lamps under Tulsi plants and in paddy fields and some observe fasting.
3) Magh or Bhogali Bihu: Is celebrated at the end of harvesting season (last night of Poush and first morning of Magh). It is a festival of feasting.
i. People build bhelaghars or mejis from straw and bamboo.
ii. After a night of eating, singing, and dancing, these mejis are burnt the next morning.
iii. People pray and seek blessings from the God of Fire for good health and prosperity.
