Assam Chatra Sanmilan was formed on 25 December 1916 at Guwahati with Lakshminath Bezbarua as president and Chandranath Sarma as the first secretary. Its main contribution was the development and preservation of the Assamese language.
The organisation encouraged school and college students to love their mother tongue and work to enrich it. Although it stayed away from direct politics, it inspired students to take part in nationalist activities and helped spread national consciousness.
Many famous personalities like Padmanath Gohain Barua, Prafulla Chandra Ray, and Krishna Kanta Handique attended its annual sessions. Assam Chatra Sanmilan also published a journal called “Milan” to promote Assamese literature and culture.
