Religious traditions in India

In the Indus Valley civilization, people prayed in many different ways and worshipped many Gods and Goddesses. Later, in the Vedic period, people also believed in one main God.

India’s old religious traditions taught people to accept others’ beliefs, to live together peacefully, and to learn from each other’s traditions. They understood that change and new ideas were also important.

As time passed, different religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism grew in India. These groups lived together without fighting. Kings also supported peace among different religions. Emperor Ashoka taught that no religion should be seen as better than another. Later, people from other religions like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism came to India. Along with the major religions, India also has many local tribal and ethnic religions, which are followed by different communities.
