The Vaishnavite movement started by Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhabdeva in the 15th century brought a big change in Assamese culture, especially in literature. During this time, many poems, songs, prose works, dramas, and devotional songs were written. Most of these works were based on the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Puranas.
Sankardeva (1449–1569) wrote many famous devotional songs called Borgeet, along with several narrative poems and dramas. His most important book is Kirtan. His first drama Chihna Yatra was performed even before Shakespeare’s dramas.
Madhabdeva, his chief disciple, further enriched Assamese literature. His greatest work is the devotional book Namghosha. Other writers of the Vaishnavite period like Bhattadeva, Ananta Kandali, and Ram Saraswati also contributed greatly to Assamese literature.
