Write a brief note on Assamese Literary Society

The Assamese Literary Society was one of the first organisations formed to promote Assamese language and literature. It was established in 1872 in Calcutta by Assamese students under the leadership of Devicharan Barua and Gangagovinda Phukan.

The main aim of this Society was to develop Assamese literature. However, it also showed some political concern. Two members of the Society, Jagannath Barua and Manik Chandra Baruah, submitted a memorandum to the Viceroy, Lord Northbrook, asking for better development of Assam’s resources and for railway connection between Bengal and Assam.

The Assamese Literary Society remained active till 1885, and it played an important role in awakening Assamese identity and encouraging literary activities.
