Sculptures of Assam

In ancient and medieval Assam, sculpture was an important art form. Sculptures were made from stone, wood, bronze, silver, gold, and even elephant tusks. Most sculptures show Hindu gods like Shiva, Vishnu, Surya, and Ganapati. Sculptures of animals are also found in many places.

Important places where Assam’s sculptures are found include Da-Parbatia (Tezpur), Bamuni Pahar, Madan Kamdev, Ambari, Dabaka, Surya Pahar, Numaligarh, Deopani, Hojai, Dibrugarh, and Sukreswar. The sculptures of Da-Parbatia, made in the 8th century, are the most famous and were influenced by the styles of the Gupta period.
